Skinny dipping & hiking at Voss
In August I went back to Staupstunet.

Bookmark: Mountain path, in the shop The place that inspired this bookmark!

I read books, and slept like an overworked adult.

I hiked, watched goats do goaty stuff, foraged, and painted and sketched.

Sketchbook: Travel Journal (Turbok), in the shop
Sticker: Gygre, in the shop Also, went skinny dipping.

Which was freezing. This view tho’.

Did some drawing for an upcoming project.

And gave our lovely hosts a Hyttebok.

Short hike from Fløyen station to Revurtjern
The trail map I designed for Fløyen covers the main trails and gravel roads. But there are many qute trails just minutes from the upper station. Here is a map for walking a fairy tale route from the upper station (or if you prefer to walk up, takes about 40 min).

Fløyen station to Revurtjern aprx 15-20 min at scenic pace. Walk through the forest behind the first crossing after the
playground. Enter the gravel road and follow it to the crossing with the stone path up the hill. Take the nature trail to
your right when reaching the first crossing after the path. Hike up the hill and follow the path to the lake. -

Sissel Kyrkjebø Good night song book
Sissel and her team asked me to illustrate a children’s song book. I loved this project; there are worse ways to spend your working days than drawing to lullabies. The deadline was quite tight, so the publisher re-used illustrations from earlier projects, and I painted new ones for the songs that didn’t have any.
Client: Sissel Kyrkjebø/TNT/Bonnier
Year: 2025Illustrations for a songbook

Brief & Process
Sissel and her partner had written and recorded an album of lullabies, and wanted a songbook to go with it. Each song would have an intro illustration, the song text and the chords, so that people could play and sing along to the album.
This is one of the shortest deadlines I’ve had on a large project. My designer, Kjetil Waren Johnsen from Wisuell Design, and editor Tonje Tornes were great partners to have during a tight schedule. Tonje has a long career behind her in publishing, and I think the reason this rocket of a project worked out was that all of us knew what we were doing. And they trusted me to know what I was doing. No project is without its snags, but I’m pleased with what we made happen in such a short time.

Since I, of course, didn’t have much time, I decided to draw out all the titles by hand. The digital hand-drawn font just didn’t spark joy.

Sissel wrote little stories and instructions for both kids and adults in the book, giving the songs context or fun details about where they originate.

Shinrin-yoku
I grew up with hiking and wandering, then didn’t do it for many years as a young adult when studying abroad, and then started again when I was more settled in life and work. And very much more after 2020. Many of my normal activities changed then, and this was one of the things I stuck to. I joined an outdoor yoga group at Fløyen, and later an outdoor breathwork group that did shinrin-yoku. I didn’t tell anyone because it felt wishy washy and woo-woo. But I fell in love with it, and now I want everyone to try it.
Hiking in Norwegian culture (and probably many other places) is about reaching a summit, walking as far as possible, for as long as possible, and as sparingly as possible. Perfected and polished and timed. This has never appealed to me, probably why I shied away from the hiking culture for a time. I didn’t fit in with the reaching of goals and rushing past all the wonder. I preferred wandering, sitting, lunching, foraging, staying. And now, sketching. I realise this is what I did as a kid, and what I’m most comfortable with. And the hygge of it all. Not deserved, as in Oh you didnt walk far enough, you havent depleted yourself enough to earn a waffle. This whole earning of things only if you deplead yourself completely is a culture thing, and is reflected in our workdays, in our social engagements, and for many women; how we show up for others. learnt behavious over generations.
I work hard, and know I need to replenish my strength. Hiking for hours depleting myself will not serve the idea of replenishing strength. So I wander instead. And now I know it has a name. And why its good for you. The trees release something that makes your cells work better, and builds the immune system. I’m out here actively building myself a better immune system, and that should be a goal in itself. Breathing in green goodness. Replenishing my magic. Going back to work to run a gallery and paint with dapples of sun and new magic.

Tall Ships Races Bergen
Client: Tall Ships Races Bergen
Year: 2019Illustrations for maps, signage, social media, and posters.

Brief & Process
The brief was to make illustrations for a map for the Tall Ships Races that would be of interest and be picked up by people not primarily interested in the Tall Ships Races.
For the Tall Ships Races Bergen 2019 I created a map conveying the festival areas and happenings, like a ton of sand being poured onto a grass field to make a beach club, arrival of pirate ships that are accessible for wheelchair users, areas of the city with warehouses converted to restaurants, activities, street food areas, and general merriment all around.
I made lots of little “Easter eggs” you can discover in the map, some fantastic, some just plain normal but not too well represented: a breastfeeding mermaid, wheelchair users stage diving, 50% male and female crews, same-sex couples with kids, grandma climbing the rigging, a female pirate captain, secret passages at Bryggen, and a mermaid in a bouncy castle. Layers that make the map fun to read.
Local people might also recognize some of the characters.

Stamp sheet to collect the different ships visited

Programme for the children’s activities
Map of Sjørøverlandsbyen, the pirate village I also made campaign illustrations; the ones below were made for different social media platforms.

Frisk Forlag
In March 2020 the world went topsy turvy; I lost some jobs and gained new ones. The projects I’ve done with Frisk started with Livssorg, a book about life altering situations and how to adjust to a new reality. 2020 summed up right there.
Client: Frisk Forlag
Year: 2020–2024Illustrations for four books.

Brief & Process
Puffins’ faces are not naturally the happiest, so I chose those birds to express downcast feelings.

SMAK!
Book about developing good habits when food is involved, written by Frida Felicia Vennerød-Diesen.

Frida Vennerød has written about how our relation to different foods change along the way, and that how we are taught about food will affect different stages in life. She talks about parenting styles, how our taste buds actually work, and that you hate tomatoes as a child can be because you actually have a really good palate.

When doing the sketches I thought about how kids sometimes are skeptical to new things, and drew a test with a few misbehaved and sour looking veggies.

Some photos of work in progress

Little sketch for the cover.

Approved sketch ready to be drawn out.

Cover letters in pencil on watercolour paper, with masking fluid.

Discarded version, needed more candy.

Inking and painting of more candy (and a pink salmon) in progress.

Finished cover. My letters, and full book design by graphic designer Øystein Vidnes.

Activity pages.

In my sketchbook (in the top of this photo) you can see a list of veggies and other goodies, ready to be crossed out when I finished each nomnom.

Misty & mossy mountains in Bergen
There is a meme about bird watching creeping up on you as you grow older – in my case it’s moss.

Possibly Cladonia furcata? Luckily I live in a cold and damp city. (Normally. This walk was a week ago, when weather was normal for this time of year.)

Up into the mist at Mount Fløyen. My house is close to Prom’s gate, one of the stations for the funicular to Mount Fløyen, and that means being cold and damp is easily within reach.

We used the trail behind the ridge close to Bjørnebu – on the map it’s the area behind the giant squirrel’s butt. The trail goes off the main path, and winds back and forth around the ridge.

More about the process behind creating the Fløyen map on my work page.
A skeleton turtle-heldgehog? I was hoping to encounter something moss’y and lichen’y that would spark some sketching, and we did meet a few creatures. And some wonderful habitats.

Cladonia cristatella or cladonia floerkeana in all its glory. (Thank you my Instagram helpers!)
Dotting on some colours while having rest in Bjørnebu. Sketch paper going all blotchy, plein air painting not really being a thing in Bergen – for obvious reasons. Coming home from our short but long hike I continued in my sketchbook, without really knowing where I was headed, but recorded the mossy turtle-hedgehog, and the different lichen.

Then this creature popped up in its Cladonia furcata hair and Lobaria pulmonaria vest.

Colour studies done on copy paper because then I won’t mind if I ruin it.

Meet the new moss creature! I don’t have a name for this little sprite yet, give me a shout if anyone wants to name it.
Thanks again to my good helpers on Instagram that helped with taxonomy of the lichen I had photographed. I’ll probably be in want of your research skills again after future encounters with exciting bracken;)

Festspillene i Bergen
“Trollkrittet” is a book by Zinken Hopp, about a boy who draws himself a friend, “Sofus” and they explore a surreal world together. Actor and writer Adele Duus and I were asked to develop the book into a script for Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen) in 2012.
Client: Festspillene
Year: 2012Illustrations and animations for stage show

Brief & Process
My role started out as illustrator and set designer, and along the way I was cast on stage too. For the set design I did both animation, and part live painting with the audience interacting when on stage.
We did the show during Bergen International Festival, and was later booked by Litteraturhuset in Bergen, and went on tour in 2013 with more than 60 shows in and around Bergen.

KODE
I was approached by KODE to illustrate and design a book about Agathe Backer Grøndahl, the Norwegian composer and pianist. The book is part of KODE’s work on lifting women composers and artists who were as big as their male peers in their own time.
Client: KODE
Year: 2025Illustrations and design for the book Agathe Backer Grøndahl

Brief & Process
The process was a lot about listening to her music and deriving stories from it, because that’s what she made: little glimpses into her feelings and the places she visited.
The book is a time travel through her music.

Ulriken Soda can labels
I was approached by Ulriken643 / Skyskraperen Restaurant to illustrate and design two sodas that were already under production with 7FJELL Brewery; one with taste of red berries and one with orange. They were to be sold at the restaurant “Skyskraperen” at the top station of the gondola at Mt Ulriken, and in their cafe shop.
Client: Ulriken
Year: 2024Illustrations for soda cans

Brief & Process
The name and concept of the sodas were still being developed, so my sketches for our first workshop were loosely based on the place itself, Mount Ulriken, the hikes, the vegetation, and energetic stick figures representing playful kids enjoying nature. Just to start somewhere, and because I will use any opportunity to have to research moss and fungi.

The good people behind Ulriken/Skyskraperen had toyed with creating some new character names for their gondolas or mascots, so we brought the names “Ulrik” and “Ulrikke” into the sketch process. As much as I loved the first creature sketches – during our workshop we did start to lean towards a more colour blocked look that they might not fit into.
For the carbonated colour play they had in mind we abandoned the idea of stick figures and nature creatures, to concentrate on energetic and colourful fruit monsters burping bubbly fruit juice. We kept the idea of the hand lettered typography throughout.

One of the drawings that popped up in my sketchbook during our workshop – it became the starting point for round 2 of the sketches. This is why I love doing workshops instead of having meetings. Then we can sit and sketch while we talk and test things out straight away, and pick up on each other’s enthusiasm for a specific topic or develop details from the sketches and notes. I later continued work in my sketchbook, while also churning out ideas on how to name the sodas and show what they taste like.

Adding some foliage for the background, printing out and moving things about, and doing several different watercolour tryouts for the burping fruit and berry monsters.
Testing out different hand-lettered naming of things. We decided that both sodas would carry the names “Ulrik & Ulrikke” and then the name of their drink type, “Turbrus” for the berry taste, and “Solbrus” for the orange, with the actual taste name written out on the side.

Burping berries.
I have probably a million exports of versions of the label design and detail typography for the back along the way, and for the various texts on the back that we worked on collaboratively. (I ran out of letters in the alphabet to use as file name versions.) These are the final edits that I sent off to print, and I’m happy I kept the old versions and sketches, I’ll probably find uses for them later.
Underneath is a photo the Ulriken/Skyskraperen squad sent me the day we got the delivery from 7FJELL, it was so fun to see the sodas finally roaming the wild.

This little girl was not used for this project, but I liked the character so well that I kept her for a different project.
