UiB Alumni: Live drawing at a Christmas concert

In 2018 I joined up with pianist Martin Vinje to draw some Christmas mood live.

Live drawing at a Christmas concert

Gunvor Rasmussen’s live drawing of two skiing snowmen projected on a big screen above the stage at the UiB Alumni Christmas concert, with the band and pianist below

Martin and band lined up smooth Christmas melodies, and I installed myself at a makeshift desk, and was filmed top down drawing out a pair of skiing snowmen. (Me there in the corner by the arched window.) The concert lasted approx. 45 min, so I could draw from scratch with pencil, then ink, and finally play around with watercolour and glitter paint for some added sparkle.

I had planned out the sketch beforehand in my sketchbook, both so that it would fit a 16:9 screening, and later to fit a passepartout for framing. The illustration was gifted to a lucky member of the audience through a lottery.

I have the illustration as a postcard in my gallery at Bryggen, and in my web shop.

    Moldejazz & Karl Seglem: Monsterjazz

Jazz musician Karl Seglem and I have met a few times, and every time we’ve said, “We should definitely work together on something.” We had no idea what, only that it had to involve music and illustration. And one winter he approached me with an idea: live figurative drawing inspired by the sounds of impro-jazz during Moldejazz 2014. I of course said YES without hesitating. Illustration & music, the two best things in life.

    Live drawing to impro-jazz

    Brief & Process

In July I left for Moldejazz, after testing out ideas in a few workshops with Seglem. Here we have arrived on stage, testing out my GoPro to capture my desk while drawing, and trying to figure out the settings and how to remove the image capture display. That opened up endless possibilities in giant projection fun 😀

All illustrations for this project were made live on stage with watercolour and ink.

A picture from an audience member capturing our first concert. We did several concerts, and they were all very different. Of course, it was impro.

The illustrations in this post are the results of different concerts with live drawing.
